Wow. Such an amazingly deep and powerful film behind a lighthearted bubblegum exterior. The script is great, and the movie feels as tight as it could be. Every character does exactly what they need to for the story - everyone contributes what they need to. Only a slight problem with the very ending and Cassie’s relationship in the middle. But Carey Mulligan is absolutely phenomenal. Emerald Fennel blends such an important message into something disturbingly real.

This was shockingly bad. The most substitute teacher/middle-school-social-studies-video surface-level inspirational movie. Tries to be inspiring and encouraging but lacks stakes or any reason to care for the characters or events. This movie claps for itself far more than it deserves to.

The editing and cinematography are also just really bad - super close up shaky cam moving camera distracts from the story with weird angles combined with whiplash editing with 30 cuts a scene that don't add anything to the…

Really entertaining and hilarious! The first two thirds are actually perfection and possible 10/10 partially due to the gorgeous cinematography, production design, and costumes in addition to the tight script. But, the last third just slows down way too much and takes too long to end. Mark Ruffalo, Toni Colette, and Naomi Ackie are all hilarious throughout, and the dinner scene had us dying from laughter in the theater! Pattinson is also good, but a couple of times the voice…

I get that’s it’s a really important story but it ultimately felt long and not very engaging. There’s good sound design that creates some interesting sequences but it just takes too long to say what it’s trying to. The beginning situation is cool but it also takes a while to actually end. Not necessarily directed in a unique or engaging way. I liked the idea of “smile” but it wasn’t emphasized enough.

If I had a nickel every time I didn’t love an acclaimed film starring Colman Domingo in in the 2020s with a best actor nomination for him I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice!

Using actual prisoners and the RTA program are obviously both important and powerful, but I didn’t really connect with the film as a whole. I think the cinematography and score were both a little showy and took me…

Q&A with Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh (on zoom)

There’s nothing wrong with this, but I never felt a strong emotional connection to the characters so the set up for devastating or emotionally powerful moments never really landed. It’s funny and well made, but without enough conflict between the two or negative traits ever written for them it lacks enough interest beyond the time jumps. No negative emotional associations, but nothing bringing me back or positive ones either.
