The long run time used to define a real sense of space, place and character. Almost feels the same conceptually as a later Hawks film like Hatari or Rio Bravo. Like these Hawks references, you are returning to “home” or other familiar spaces and places in the sphere of the characters’ world, but also feel the passage of time as well, giving a sense of reality to the whole thing.
