I don’t think I’ve ever seen a horror movie set almost exclusively in the daytime. Yet Ari Aster seems to make it just as scary. Also oddly claustrophobic even though it’s mostly set outside in the Swedish countryside. Truly an accomplishment for the horror genre. Frustratingly formulaic. Sam Raimi is a brilliant director and perfect choice for Doctor strange in theory. But the studio likely kept him on a short leash. Doctor Strange doesn’t get much character development. Jarring to see Scarlet Witch as evil, playing into the “mad with grief” trope of losing her kids. Feels like they were afraid to try something new with the marvel formula. Overall really disappointing.

Amazing handling of subject matter, the entire cast is phenomenal. Soundtrack by Robin Guthrie is a standout, enchanting with a sense of nostalgia. Truly a touchstone in queer cinema. My only complaint is that we left these characters too soon.
