Invasion of Astro-Monster 1965
As someone who has built miniatures before, I love the scenes of destruction. These aren’t just box like buildings that crumple, but very life like emulations of buildings that get destroyed in very realistic ways, like a power like falling atop a store or the shingles of a roof coming off one by one. I think it’s great that CGI has come as far as it has, but also there’s a real charm when there are actual, tangible practical effects, which “Invasion of the Astro-Monster” uses wonderfully.

As someone who’s edited for documentary, I’m such a sucker when it’s done really well. Editor, Robert Stengård, does such a great job of mixing VHS family tapes, World of Warcraft gameplay recreations, and interview footage into a gut-wrenching, touching story about a boy with muscular dystrophy and how he created unconventional connection through the online space of World of Warcraft.
I think this hit home for me. I had a friend, Ricky, who had muscular dystrophy and as I…
