    “Does a wolf cry out his loneliness?”

    The scene where the ladies give M a free meal at the cafe chokes me up every time.

    The Man is the purest distillation of a  Kaurismaki character. He has nothing and nobody but manages to find beauty and kindness in a cruel world.

    A running theme in Juzo Itami’s films is women are too good for men. This is definitely true of Tales Of A Golden Geisha.

    Nayoko (Nobuko Miyamoto’s character) and to some extent all of the women in this film are just another object for these power and money-obsessed men.

    I think what Itami is trying to get at here is that being a woman in Japan in the ’90s is like being Nayoko herself. She is a lucky charm for…
