My appreciation of this movie keeps growing over the years. I remember renting it over and over at Blockbuster’s 🤦♀️ It’s just so damn stylish and dark and engrossing. I feel like it’s the precursor to “Drive,” (love that movie too) with a lot of the same themes and atmosphere. James Caan is his brutal, beautiful, no-nonsense self. He just embodies coiled violence, ready to spring into action at the least provocation. The love story between him and Tuesday Weld’s character is unlike anything I’ve seen before or since. Uh-oh, this might be the start of a Michael Mann binge.
It’s as if we live in a world where grown ass men can be as ridiculously committed to a juvenile project as humanly possible and it makes me laugh A LOT.
I’ve been meaning to watch Incendies for a while, I’m a huge fan of Denis Villeneuve and love all his films. This is a very tough watch. Such a heartbreaking story, told with the clear-eyed artistry of DV. It seems like a mystery thriller, but at the heart of it is a morality tale particularly relevant right now. The settings, Montreal and Jordan, are supposed to be worlds apart, yet DV captures scenes and sounds that make these two places…
Obviously this movie is a masterpiece of horror, Eggers has once again created something incredible. It’s a movie so highly stylized that I feel it belongs in its own special universe, a very special place, far far away from other movies… it’s like I just can’t judge Nosferatu against anything else, because Eggers has changed the criteria.
Did I enjoy it? Absolutely.
Was I impressed by it? 100%.
Did I love it? No, but in the same way I don’t love umeboshi. It’s probably an acquired taste, for those with a much more advanced palate than mine.
