  complicated, thorny, authentic, and brutal. about as grim and nihilistic as a neo-noir can get. you used to be able to give someone like carl franklin 2.5 million dollars and you’d get a truly great and mature movie out of it. bill paxton was a wonderful actor and he’s missed dearly.
