The Brutalist 2024
Intimate. Heartbreaking. Beautifully filmed and told. I kept thinking about my great grandparents who fled everything they knew in Ukraine before the war for the freedom promised in America. Their hardships, their struggles; the ways they broke, rebuilt, and broke again all for their family and the freedom to openly express their Jewishness.
Call me an idiot, but I needed the epilogue, so I’m grateful it was there to cut through the tension while breaking my heart into a thousand pieces.

A film that needed to be seen in a movie theater to be truly appreciated. I was too focused on the plot when I should have given myself a lobotomy a la The Boys and simply enjoyed for the loud, absurd prequel everyone who loved Fury Road asked for.

The second star in my rating is based on the fact that it somehow wasn’t worse than Morbius or Wonder Woman 1984. This is a movie where the executives likely took something pretty good, gobbled it up, shit their messy interpretation out on a mahogany desk somewhere in Culver City, and spent the next 3 months taking turns polishing it until it was a shiny little turd that they thought audiences would want to swallow.
