  I am not Japanese and I did not grow up in the time period this movie takes place, yet I can entirely empathize with the dreams, letdowns and the simple everyday life that Taeko is reminiscing about.

  Even though the art style differs, the transitions between memories and present time are done effortlessly. In the present everything is so detailed, almost photographic, whereas the past is purposely kept hazy, focusing more on the emotions of each character and not as…
