There is a compelling case the bright colors and mid-tier singing, cringe dancing, but overall light whimsical vibe was to mirror the honeymoon phase of the relationship as the colors fade do to dark hues and neon backlights when the weight of reality sets in–not sure if it makes me forgive the first half of the film.
Stone's casting song, to die for. Stone's dinner scene, stunning. Gosling does a decent job playing a rather punchable character at parts.

The saving grace is the fact that the essence of the film is based in reality.
Admittedly, trying to weave together so many story lines and paint a whole picture is difficult, yet somehow Nolan did a better job when keeping us suspended in the alternate reality of dreams. Much is too left for wanting from the sheer force of actors in the film, to no fault of their own.
A fine film and a welcomed tale of the duality of human nature.
