Bloody superb! I think this, sadly, could only be made in the 80's, because they really believed it back then. 'It' being... what? The potential for borderline divine power and goodness in the human spirit?
The film (and this review) is teetering on the edge of cheese, but the belief and heart of the film keeps it on the side of the legendary. It's not silly in how it shows it's heart and it's raw brutality; you need both in…

An exemplary example of tone, mood and propulsive, cohesive, semantic narrative. Fascinating. I would only wish for a thin strand of an alternate ingredient in the story, a moment or glimpse of any respect or honour for the lead perhaps - but that's just me. I feel a counterweight is needed in some form against the somewhat displeasingly inevitable slide into the dark, sludgy mire, not from a sense of moral or atmospheric relief, but more from a need for a hint of further complexity lurking beneath the surface, waiting to be found.

A masterwork. Post-modern, manipulating the audience's opinions and engagement with such elan and skill, and yet in a way which itself commends respect and meaning. (watched on youtube,08/21, 'Flic 2005 chapter 1 and 2' @ Asian Movies)
