"It's not like in the movies or in books, where everything is precise, thought-out, organized, with a clear-cut goal. Everything's chaos, chance, pain, disorder."

This quote from Mad Love sums up Żuławski's filmography. Żuławski's cinema forcefully tells us we are all victims of life and that we know nothing about our existence; that film should not be made purely for entertainment, but for introspection.

Mad Love pays homage to Dostoyevsky's The Idiot. However, if one is familiar with Dostoyevsky, it…

    The Possessed

    ★★★★★

The Possessed (or La Donna del Lago) is a slept-on masterpiece of noir cinema.

The film plays out like a fevered dream as we follow the writer Bernard who searches for a girl he wishes to reunite with romantically. However, he finds once he gets to the small lakeside town where they met that there is a great mystery surrounding her.

The pacing (and ending) could have been better but I appreciate the fairly original take on the revenge genre.

I’m glad I got to catch this at the cinema because of how wild some scenes got — always fun to be with an audience when lots of blood gets spilt. Overall I had a great time watching this and I think it is close to perfection with just two plot holes that I couldn’t help but notice.

Plot hole 1: Who is this company that provided the Substance? What motivation do they have, because no money was demanded? The…

    Dune: Part Two

    ★★★

Dune: Part Two works as a science fiction blockbuster spectacle but ultimately lacks any kind of depth. The most interesting part of the film is its Messiah narrative, but its execution is quite shallow. I wanted more philosophical lore and the psychology of religion to be examined rather than merely displayed.

I admit I likely ask too much from a film trying to please the masses and be pure entertainment, but Denis Villeneuve's direction is simply more sophisticated than that.…
