Fincher's goal in life is to make a movie that looks and feels AI generated. By stringing together the loose ends of dozens of movies without a shred of originality he's made his biggest leap yet. Even the use of The Smiths feels like he's using a Filmmaker 3.0 plugin that he bought on the App Store.
Fincher would probably laugh at you if you said movies should have souls, but maybe if he added some life to his products he would actually be relevant.
