  “I knew a guy who was dyslexic, but he was also cross-eyed, so everything came out right.”

  Can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like this movie.

  On the one hand, it was always interesting, always engaging, and it felt dangerous.  (Anyone else think the two brothers were gonna knock each other out?).  There are some undeniably wonderful images and sequences.  The kid taping the spoons to use for weights, while his mom tap dances in shoes far too big or…

  There is only closure when it is found, but even then, there is none.  

  Among the really, really effective aspects of this movie is the way photography and other forms of archiving are utilized to keep hope and the spirit of family alive.

  The sequence of scenes that starts with the home video, follow with the maid dressing him in “manly” clothes, and the playful, beautiful escorting of his son back home might be one of the best sequences in film.  The way the Super 8 footage captures the incredible amounts of deep emotion one feels watching family during a happier, simpler time is so effective.  Impossible not to think of my own family’s old VHS tapes, watching us when we were all…
