DoaU is another title in the ever growing A24 catalogue that I would label as “normie-core”. These are their films which are both cost effective crowd-pleaser films and which reduce the experimental, niche aspects of A24s best films, leaving behind a “indie-enough” aesthetic. Opus

    ★★½

Opus is a film that thinks of itself as a satire rich with social commentary, building its narrative to take aim at various cultural and political realities, focusing mostly on the abuse of power, privilege, and the fragile egos of those who hold both. This dreamy atmosphere is then juxtaposed with an…

    The Monkey

    ★★½

While The Monkey can be funny and darkly nihilistic, it also feels exceptionally pointless and tediously apathetic, and by the midway point of the film it commits the most severe cinematic sin of all- being surprisingly boring. I will say though, the first half of the film did a great job of hooking the audience, and it is worth seeing just for the energetic pacing and shock humor that the film is able to fully commit to.
