I first saw this one back when it came out and then sometime in 2015/16 so it was a refreshing experience revisiting the movie - especially now that I understand food a little bit more.
Watching it again made me realize that the movie was really just ok, I guess I was just bedazzled with it back then when I first saw it. I would watch it again though, still a favorite feel-good and food-spiration movie. It has heart and aesthetically, gastronomically pleasing too.
It definitely hit a soft spot in me. I could relate to some of the scenes and the general East Asian culture – for some reason it made me nostalgic too. Though the story wasn’t at all grand or melodramatic, it did bring it home.
The relationships of the characters felt authentic especially the beautiful and witty relationship between David and his halmeoni. Ultimately, I’m glad that the whole thing wasn't a cliche wherein we see immigrants just trying to fit into a place and live the American Dream, rather a family trying to fit in with each other.
