  A deliriously self-aware and hysterical ride, Heart Eyes embodies the current trend of inventive horror movies, with genuinely effective and unforced humor. The absurdity isn't reliant on the movie's gimmick, but rather stems from clever directing and script. While the common trope of a rapid-fire, twist-filled third act, often culminating in a humorous or clever line before the final kill (a trend prevalent in modern slashers like "Happy Death Day," "Scream 2022," and "Companion"), can become tiring, the movie makes up for it with its script and the charming chemistry of its leads.

  The confusing tone, the fuzzy sociopolitical commentary, and the questionable character plot points is what keeps this reboot from living up to its potential. They're not really picking a political side here nor are they empowering what they so clearly established from very early on. You're better off watching the ridiculously bad and over the top original Wrong Turn franchise because at least they're aware of just how disposable they really are.
