Miracle Mile 1988
I tried to screen this ~20 years ago on a Netflix mailer dvd but, alas, it was too scratched to play. Finally caught this streaming (currently) on Prime and I have to say I was a little disappointed. Maybe I’ve just heard it referenced too many times and my expectation became unrealistic, maybe it’s a product of the decade it was produced and released. If it had the paranoia of some of the 60s and 70s sci fi I think…

Watchmen 2009
When I saw Watchmen in ‘09 the graphic novel was still pretty fresh in my head and I don’t think there was any way I couldn’t have been disappointed… but I hated it. Watching this cut all these years later was enjoyable. Some good performances. Some great cinematography.
I think the HBO series adaptation is near perfect and captures an essence… of the times (2010s), of the characters (Ozymandias specifically, of the Cold War era (and current) paranoia that nothing else has.Translated from by

Whiplash 2014
TBH I avoided this film for so long because I thought I knew exactly what it was. I was not wrong. If JK wasn’t so eerily similar to the coaches and band director of my youth maybe it would have been a different experience. (For me)

The Holdovers 2023
When I saw the first trailer for this my only thought was, *this looks like a movie I didn’t want to see 25 years ago* (and def not now). But after hearing great reviews from The Podcast-verse… WOW this thing starts off strong. A+ cinematography and pacing, some great dialogue. First act was near perfect but it kind of fell off for me after that.
