  an all encompassing, high stakes, dance infused, moustache twirling villainy filled bonanza that pops with a colourful cartoonish lightness whilst maintaining it’s gritty warrior spirit.

  the most enjoyable 3 hour melodramatic anti-colonial action adventure film ever.

  does it lack cultural sensitivity, yes. does it represent the trans experience in a meaningful and nuanced way, no. does every scene end in an obnoxiously long fade to black, yes.

  although some of the songs are memorable and compelling, most of the story is trite and ideologically bankrupt. the way the story plays out here is borderline offensive and doesn’t really approach the themes and topics brought up in a serious or compelling way for me. there’s some incredibly irresistible camera work on display here but apart from a few scenes it is in service of almost nothing.

  refreshing to see this genre satirised AND elevated. genuinely sentimental at times and kind of funny but i’m not going bananas for it.

Following
