It's a shame they never made any more of these. The books, by the late Phil Rickman, are great, with the Herefordshire countryside and its inhabitants central to the stories (so not just "ghoul of the week"). I beleive disapointing viewing figures did for it but maybe someone will re-think.
I hadn't actually watched the whole film since it was a Sunday afternoon movie on TV when I was a kid. The main thing I remembered about it was my dad telling me how unusual people had found the score when it came out, with just the zither instead of a full orchestra.
It still holds up very well - with some nice noir-ish shots and good use of the battle-scarred city of Vienna. Plot-wise it's a perfectly competent thriller, but what really elevates it is quite how much it cranks up a gear whenever Welles is on screen.
Time to read some Graham Greene...
I must be getting old (the same age as Demi Moore, actually) but I came away from this completely underwhelmed.
I wanted to like it -female director, critique of the entertainment industry and the objectification of women, etc, but it really didn't hit the mark.
From the start the lighting and camera angles seemed to undermine Moore who is still, at 60+, a very beautiful woman and there seemed to be an inherent criticism of her choosing to go through…
Astonishing.
We nearly missed this, but so glad we didn't. National Theatre at Home once again proving its worth in bringing top class theatre to the provinces (and the world).
