A more perfect noir than what we typically imagine from the genre because it has to deal with the central antangonism of American, especially post-war, life. There are more iconic Denzel roles but I’d argue this is actually Peak Denzel, the man is smoking. I assume the scene where Jennifer Beals has to go in and then not kiss Denzel took like 30 takes. A bit of a paint by numbers script that does manage to swerve a bit and is truly elevated by Culkin and Eisenberg’s performances and some fantastic images. Love that this is so clearly set in Poland (a place I’ve never been, mind you).

    ★★

Prequels come with a high degree of difficulty built in — the fate of the characters is trapped in amber, we know how this goes, and, like [bong rip] do any of us even have, like, free will, maaaan. The Many Saints of Newark suffers not only from this genre bind but also from being attached to one of the most beloved and transformative pieces of American art produced at the edge of the century. It would be difficult to come…
