State Fair 1945
The original State Fair is incomparable. I heard that it’s the only musical that was written by Rogers and Hammerstein specifically for the big screen and not the stage. The cast is PERFECT - I think this is Charles Winninger‘s best role as the doddering patriarch and Jeanne Crain’s lovelorn Margie is as cute as a button. There is very little plot but that’s ok because every part of this episodic little tale makes you feel something and every song is so tuneful and fun. I think this is the most “pointless” Rogers and Hammerstein musical ever made but it also just might be my favorite
