I know it gets over-shadowed by other events, but Pippet the dog barely gets a mention in the list of the shark’s victims.  Sad.

The scene that killed me this time is when Dreyfus asks Shaw if he’s ever had one do this before, and Shaw says, “no”.  From then on, Shaw plays the fear beautifully, it’s really amazing.  Watch him as he revs the boat engine, which makes no sense for an experienced seaman whose boat is also his…

I spent the second act struggling to enjoy the madcap race around New York and New Jersey because of my growing concern that Garnick had not just a concussion, but perhaps was developing a subdural hematoma. He gets more and more disoriented as the day goes on, and you could argue that he’s just tired, but he also gets ataxia, so there’s some worrisome focality to his exam. It’s just really a joy to watch a pig and a duck squish, stretch, and contort themselves through every frame of this movie. It’s also weirdly inspiring that it has almost no interest in IP strip mining (looking at you, Space Jam 2), but rather in taking two characters and plunking them down in an original story. Well, okay, mostly original, since there’s definitely a point where it becomes Armageddon, with…

Somewhere in action movie heaven, Buster Keaton is looking down on this movie, with its extended train bit, its exploding bridges, and its car-chase handcuff slapstick routine, and he’s…well he’s not smiling, but he’s giving it a tip of his little hat.

Just a solid, crackerjack action spectacle. If it’s not as personal a statement and victory lap as Maverick, it’s still Cruise flipping a bird to both time and the digital age, and then jumping off a cliff while…
