The acting in the movie is great, but I was already expecting that. Bob Dylan’s music is great, but I already knew that. This movie (like most of the recent biopics I’ve seen) didn’t really have an actual story to tell but instead just reenacted the famous historical events that I could just watch the actual Bob Dylan do by searching for it on YouTube. Timothee Chalamet’s ability to mimic Bob Dylan was impressive, but that’s about it.
I did not expect to enjoy this film as much as I did. Well, “enjoy” is the wrong word, considering the subject matter, but the film definitely moved me, thanks in a large part to the cast’s performances (especially Kirsten Dunst). Violence in today’s movies tends to be gratuitous and pointless, but “Civil War” managed to use it quite sparingly but effectively to advance the story: There is no glory in the bloodshed, it’s just a reality.
