A film that is fundamentally about love, but is infused with absences more than anything else. The one shot that really felt like love is an early dancing scene between Weiqing and Jiali's brother, two bodies effortlessly following each other around the room as a classic emblem of young love. But this love doesn't exist in the real world; Jiali's brother marries the daughter of a physician in order to strengthen the family business, and Weiqing never finds anyone who…

    Three things:

    1. This is an expertly made movie. The camerawork is so important to the seamless integration of surrealism throughout the film, and the expert use of framing and focus combined with skillful editing and pacing allow the story to unfold and creates a space where frozen adults and celestial ceilings are just another part of the children's world. Blake Cameron James and Gian Knight Ramirez give two of the best child performances ever set to the screen, and…

This movie is awesome. The trope of down and out American trying to strike back against the system holds a lot more weight when it's about women of color rather than white men, which is what I'm used to seeing in heist movies. These characters aren't fully fleshed out in the writing, particularly Tisean, but it doesn't really matter because they are played as real people instead of parts of a machine. Smith and Fox are great, but it's obviously…

Christine goes from a girl who is a little silly because she's got a little crush to a girl who's actually crazy and a danger to herself and others because she feels the immense burden of eternal love for a boy she hardly knows and unfortunately she's so real for that. It's a little hard for me to take the last section of the film seriously because of how wild it gets but at the same time it seems just…

There's no love in this movie.

Hae Sung doesn't have love. He's just hung up on a girl he held hands with when he was twelve. He somehow hasn't been able to move on for twenty years, which is kind of pathetic. I guess they might have reconnected in their twenties, but a Skype montage with boring dialogue mostly drowned out by the score doesn't do anything to convince me that he's in love. Maybe a childish infatuation. Not love.…

    Important events deserve better movies.

I thought it was weird that it was an Amazon Prime film at the beginning, but as the film went on, it made complete sense. This is a safe, easy, unpolitical movie for an extremely important moment in Argentina's political history. It reduces the political struggle to a black and white narrative where the good guys were able to just do their job and defeat the bad guys.

There are no stakes. The death threats…
