So glad I went into this not knowing anything…
The score was incredible, and the first half was crazy beautiful. Maybe slightly naive, but I wasn’t expecting the dread/horror of that second half, especially the heroin scene.
Something about the in-your-face American dream/trauma metaphors of the tomb rape & marble shipping rebuild worked so well when the rest of film was dishing out a tonne of ambiguity around Zionism, creative endeavours, who you spend your time with etc.
One of the best films I’ve seen in ages & up there with my favourite scores of all time.
Love the world building as always, but sometimes found myself laughing at the film. Orlok’s moustache and voice were so joke it almost lost me completely, verging on ‘a series of unfortunate events’ type shit. Still really good/fun but maybe a bit more northman, a bit less lighthouse.
Only time I’ve ever felt empathy for Nicholas Hoult.
Explored nothing that it didn’t tell you in the first few mins… Lost the will to live when they gave you about 10 cues to work out it was the doctor from earlier. Stupidly long for a completely empty film. Maybe I had the wrong expectations?
Gore and prosthetics etc were so good though
