“I am sexy and sexual and grief-stricken and shrewd and zany and romantic and generous and imaginative and manipulative and reckless and ambitious and good.” C*roline C*lloway

Samantha Morton is a force to be reckoned with as she spins off the rails in the throes of grief. She’s a flawed protagonist but her immature and impulsive self-destructive/actually destructive behaviour belies her extreme vulnerability. She is lost in her loss, and the only way she can process her grief is to burn her life to the ground and hope to rise from the ashes.

Very charming and cute, often funny and also an affectionate portrait of noisy neighbourhood life.

Really weird tone and pacing, and distractingly awful Italian accents. It looks great and the story is interesting on paper, but I think it would need recutting and maybe even overdubbing to make it work. Penelope Cruz was the only performance I rated especially highly. Shailene Woodley direly miscast. Why not try using some actual Italians??

This feels like a film that no one should remember in ten years time. Schlocky and sentimental, the plot is patently desperate to wring tears from its audience.

Though Garfield and Pugh are both fine actors, their one dimensional characters didn’t feel real to me, as they lived out their near perfect romance in achingly stylish, spacious homes. The script doesn’t trouble Garfield’s newly divorced Tobias with any hobbies or friends, just a job so nondescript…
