Undeniably prescient. Rather difficult for those born after 1998 to understand.
Ultimately an uplifting movie, but Linney and Emmerich’s roles are so ruthlessly self-serving it became difficult to watch. However, Carrey is at his peak powers, delivering a layered and rather complex performance.
Admittedly overwhelming going in blind, as there was so much to take in. Perhaps not scary, but incredibly unsettling. So much that it induced nightmares, which is rare…if not a first.
I’m a big fan of Monroe (who isn’t?) and Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter is an overlooked gem), but am often mixed on Cage. There are shades of crazy Cage (not my bag), but his performance ultimately won me over. In fact, his very last scene is pure fucking movie star.
This is a slow burn banger that may manifest into a modern horror masterpiece. Needs some time to marinate.
