I brought my dad to see this movie and I thought it was a totally pleasant, mild jaunt through the sounds of the early 60s. My dad then said “I loved every second of that movie” four times on the ten minute car ride home. Thank you James Mangold for allowing me to be The Best Son of the Year™.

Well-acted and exceptionally directed, but a mostly strong script loses the thread by the final scenes. For a movie that clearly wants to scrutinize the church, the institution is let off shockingly easy. The plot twist ending is very 90s in its use of queerness for shock value, and it ultimately muddies the rest of the film’s message about whether the church can ever move beyond its oppressive history. Maybe this is a movie for religious people who also take issue with the church as an institution, but I can’t embrace the hope included in the finale.
