I've been trying to put a finger on exactly why McDormand's melodrama works in Banshees of Inisherin and not here. For one, Banshees frames itself as a fable. While it is a story soaked in tragedy, there's an absurd comedy to Colm severing his fingers for a reason as trivial as a broken friendship. On the other hand, the issues tackled in Three Billboards are far more grave; and the tone it seems to establish follows suit.
