It's good that James Woods's stomach orifice was self-lubricating. Otherwise, shoving his gun in it would have hurt a lot more.

Videodrome is such a weird, twisted, and engaging ride. It's a satirical, surreal, body-horror movie from David Cronenberg that's about as "Cronenberg" as it gets. A witty and rollicking depiction of the Manchester music scene in the late 70's through the early 90's. The viewer sees the rise and fall of Factory Records. The label produced seminal post-punk bands such as Joy Division (later New Order) and Happy Mondays. Steve Coogan is perfect as the visionary and hedonistic Tony Wilson, who was the co-founder of Factory Records and also a nightclub owner and television presenter. All of these enterprises were driven by his passion for Manchester and its vibrant music scene.

A clever and entertaining take on a familiar sci fi/horror trope. It is highly relevant in an era in which technology increasingly functions as a crutch that enables people to avoid doing the work necessary to develop emotional maturity and build healthy relationships. There's a lot of violence in this movie. Some of it is pretty shocking. But the biggest shock for me came from seeing Jack Quaid's "O" face.

Solid Elmore Leonard adaptation. It has clever, hard-boiled dialogue, a likeable criminal protagonist, and an engaging plot.
