The most generous read of the movie is that its opinion of Bob Dylan, and his music, are extremely dark. It portrays him up as the quintessential yuppie, a man who leeches off the social justice movements of the 1960s, partaking (or even defining) the empty protest culture that monetized those movements. And then at the zenith his success in that culture he parlays that success to launch a rock career that forsakes everything the protest movements he supposedly supported stood for.
But this read would require the movie to be good and not boring.
