Sometimes you just don’t get a phenomenon while it’s happening in real time. WICKED was one of those things. The runtime seemed absurd on paper. The hiding of the film being “Part One” in the marketing was another thing I found baffling. I was not looking forward to it.
Then I saw it. And yeah, it’s earned its length and once Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo start having scenes together the film cooks.
Production design is over the top in…
The insanity of the ending is EXACTLY what the rest of this film is missing. It feels oddly lifeless for an 80s “action” movie.
Gene Simmons is interestingly serious in the role of a terrorist.
This was a surprisingly dark spook fest from 1980s Disney. It’s a bit of a mess but there are some extremely effective bits and overall I liked it.
The original ending(s) included on the Blu-ray are much more satisfying (but no doubt would have been TERRIFYING to a typical Disney audience) and the original opening was also so extreme that it’s not a shock that the film was pulled from distribution after a week and a new ending was commissioned. Oh to have been at one of the original screenings….
FUUUUUUUUCK, what an ending.
Part period melodrama, part bodice ripper this is pitch black with technicolor splashes of red.
The cast is pretty great and it has got an ending not soon forgotten.
