This film has some beautiful sets, great shots, and wonderful ambiance. The gorgeous opera performances throughout are also a plus.
The use of first-person camera shots was tasteful and well executed.
The way that women were traumatized and assaulted in this movie seemed almost fetishistic to me, something that made my skin crawl. But I guess that that's what a movie like this is aiming to do 🤷
Throughout this movie, I felt an odd disconnect between the words, body language, and actions of the characters. I felt like I was watching actors, and not in a good way. It seemed as though none of the characters were convicted of what they were doing and not entirely sure why they were doing it.
Still giving it four stars. The set design, costuming, and sheer quantity of product you get rescues the movie from complete mediocrity. I also have to applaud Nolan for working one of his annoyingly corny, psychedelic twists into a non-fiction story.
Eileen is a dark, brooding, anxious, hilarious movie that is largely true to its source material. It takes some liberties here and there. The movie's Eileen is less gross and offputting than she is in the book; Eileen's father (while still a horrendous wretch) is a little more fatherly; what's subtextual in the book about Eileen and Rebecca's relationship is made explicit in the movie; and the overall tenor is less bleak and more colorful.
