    how can you keep hope alive?

    i liked this little thing. the story's main theme and structure is nice; it's not about overcoming evil, just outlasting it, carrying a light into the future. so even though our heroes end the story with less than they started with in so many ways, it doesn't feel like defeat really. it's not groundbreaking stuff, but it's rare enough for a kids movie to end with something so inconclusive and bittersweet. the art ranges…

    i love how tightly framed everything is. it makes things feel close, intimate even, but also creates some sense of mystery. i can't help but think there's some relationship between all these pieces, like this is all one machine; i found myself thinking that maybe this portion is driven by one the film showed me earlier, and would set about imagining how they might interact. but i also love how sometimes i only get to see one full cycle of the mechanics, sometimes i get to really hang out with it. a lot of playfulness

    this is a dime store pulp novel in film form. the broadly applied, expressive colors and rampant stylization screams out loudly as the roaring synths, oozing from the pores. this is how my brain recreates books, in illusory handfuls of raw emotion, and old pulp novels are all about this kind of slimy, dripping emotional content
