  I’ve just come to realize I am not a fan of Osgood Perkins. To me, his movies are the definition of style over substance, and while for some people that might be what draws them to him, for me it’s what draws me away. 

  Somehow this was worse than Longlegs, and I also really didn’t like that.

  For a movie called The Substance, I’m not sure it delivered quite as much of it as I’d hoped.

  
  There’s a lot to appreciate here: the sound design (absolutely amazing), Demi Moore’s performance (even more amazing), the direction, the thematic ambition, and the character work all deserve a nod. But where it lost me was in its heavy-handed reliance on shock value and its somewhat clumsy exploration of the themes it aimed to tackle. Those aren’t inherently dealbreakers, but for…
