What the actual fuck?! I mean, director Michael Gracey shoots the hell out of this cliche screenplay about a narcissistic twat depicted as a photorealistic CGI chimpanzee for some reason. It’s a terrible movie that looks better than 99% of Hollywood blockbusters these days. But I didn’t know anything about Robbie Williams before this. I’d barely heard of him, so even if he wasn’t a narcissistic twat he wouldn’t deserve any of these artistic fireworks.

Director Pablo Larraín narrates the origin of democracy in Chile as the story of a young ad man using MTV style to defeat Pinochet, or in other words using the tools of America against the dictator they put into power. The plot spins its wheels a bit — apparently there was supposed to be several short stories and the final film was hacked down to two — and it took me a while to get used to this rather queer performance of Sherlock, but eventually the movie won me over. I really enjoyed this take on the character. The movie is funny, sexy, clever, and surprising — just as you would expect from Billy Wilder.
