I watched this in 2015, I liked but didn't love and so went back after All of Us Strangers to revisit Andrew Haigh's films. Charlotte Rampling is devastatingly good, the dialogue is sparse but so much pain and searching and confusion. Looks at loneliness like Strangers and reminds us how lonely we can be even in a long relationship like theirs. Courtenay is also brilliant and complicated.
Looks amazing. Love the cinematography and Zac Efron is incredible. Felt quite long and even paced, maybe even a bit slow at times. Stayed with me though.
One of my favourite films of the year. Amazing performance from lead Leonie Benesch, the scenes in the teachers' common room are so taut and nerve jangling, aided with a great score. A very modern morality play where no one person is the villain. Didn't love the end but clever and thought provoking and gripping.
Clinical, chilling, uncomfortable, numbing, brilliant. Cinematography was striking, compositions meticulous, sound design awesome. Has stayed with me. I think I preferred Sandra Huller Anatomy of a Fall but it's an abacus performance of a ruthless social climber. The way she brushes of her mother leaving perhaps most chilling out all.
