Great set design, and use of limited camera perspectives to tell a story. The pacing and the suspense was well timed as well. Only docking a half a star because the visual effects in the final scenes were a bit lackluster but still an overall excellent movie.
A white savior documentary meant to make Westerners feel better about themselves. The tone of the film is off-putting and condescending. It tries to feel like a spy movie by setting up secret cameras in the Taiji cove. After filming, the director stands in the middle of Scramble Kosaten showing the footage, but everyone ignores him—perfectly proving the point that he and his team completely failed to communicate with or understand the Japanese perspective. I don’t recall seeing any Japanese…
Love the cinematography and set design, but this movie just felt like a wasted opportunity. It feels like the movie should’ve ended 30 minutes earlier, and even then I didn’t feel like the movie really took the concept of body perception and fame further. It lacked substance.
It’s not as bad as some people make it but at the same time I’m baffled that this movie is getting so many Oscar noms. It makes no sense that a French director decided to make a movie about 3 Mexican women in Mexico… except the 3 main actresses are not born and raised Mexican actresses so poor representation to start with.
There were maybe a few songs that were cool but lots of bad and cringy songs. This movie did not to be a musical.
