Wow, a great WW2 film lurking anonymously on YouTube. This German film - made while the war was still a fresh lived experience - excoriates Germany by spotlighting their stupidity and cruelty in the late stage of the war.

7 teenage boys get called to arms as Germany crumbles towards inevitable loss. While adults mouth the platitudes of nazism they see the writing on the wall. Unfortunately... the kids have taken the rhetoric at face value. Given a meaningless task…

I had to find out why this one was so revered. Still not entirely sure, unless you're a Lynch fan in which case it's a lot of Lynch. Weird, dreamlike, etc. It probably hit a lot harder on 1990.

For me this makes the story vapid - Marie Antoinette's story is unremarkable outside the context of the French Revolution and the abolition of royalty. It's a historical riches-to-rags tale of which this film depicts only the riches - though it…

Really enjoyed this film. But also, I think there's more here than I can reasonably wrap my head around right now.

This film throws out a lot to consider regarding the Catholic Church, portraying it as many coexisting dualities. Conservative and liberal. Tradition and modernity. Politics and ideology. Power and humility. Gentle and warlike. Moral and practical. The conclave to elect a new pope is a maelstrom of these conflicting elements, in the eye of which stands Cardinal Lawrence in…
