A different kind of Yang, something that confuses more than be confronted. Nevertheless, there is still enightenment with his flawed characters who made questionable decisions. Fakers are more real than the real, and the age of comedy and tragedy is long gone. Is emotion devoid of this modern world? Or are we just surpressing such feelings to make ourselves satisfied? There are still numerous questions as we go, but maybe that's life; and maybe we can still go out for a coffee with that person after all the messed up things that happened.

A Brighter Summer Day 1991
They live in their own make believe kingdoms, as a result of the socio-politocal state of the country. Gangs are rampant, family pressure is present, and the confusing thing that is love has to be dealt with. This is such an organic epic about growing up but at the same time, a raw tale of the shared trauma of the Taiwanese people. Every image breathes with life and that's what makes this even more tragic than it sounds. Such is the endeavor of the lonely human being in a place full of lonely people. Truly, a once in a lifetime experience.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The story is mainly based on equality, among gazes, words, touch, and strokes. Consequently, when there is equality there is also power which is evident with the love and passion they have for one another. They tried to dominate one another but learned eventually that truth about their passion. The film organically displayed the progression of such feelings and what is more interesting that even though tragic, their bond is very equal despite of innate flaws and desires. What they had as forbidden lovers was comfort in a place of patriarchy.
