25th Hour 2002
This is the saddest of Spike Lee's films. Monty is just so fucked. He is going away for a long time. From beginning to end, there is no way out for him. There is a speculative sequence toward the end that ultimately reinforces that reality of Monty's situation, which cannot be changed. Shot and set immediately after 9/11, the film's bleakness captures a certain mood of that moment perfectly.
That the hopelessness of the story turns on the Rockefeller drug…

Lucky Luciano 1973
Highly underrated film. Gian Maria Volonte is superb in title role.
Norman Mailer called Lucky Luciano "the finest movie yet made about the Mafia, the most careful, the most thoughtful, the truest and most sensitive."

The Lovers 1958
The scenes of the last 5-10 minutes make the film worth it, as it portrays Jeanne poised between past and present in crystal image, ultimately facing an uncertain and possibly disappointing future, perhaps anticipating the final shot of The Graduate but certainly the penultimate sequence of The 400 Blows. The suddenness of her decision doesn't make much sense if taken without the poetic license that it crystallizes her conflicts and desires.
