In light of more recent encounters with Ridley Scott's attempts at historical epics this was unexpectedly refreshing.
I went into this rewatch seeking mostly to refresh my memory before the release of the sequel and catch the highlights of some memorable performances. Instead I found myself utterly engrossed in the story and captivated anew by the delivery of lines I've had memorized for years.
It was a delight to find that Gladiator continues to live up to its public reputation and my personal memories.
