  Landmark Monday Mystery Movie Screening

  Another entry into the ever growing “Eat the Rich” subgenre, Death of a Unicorn embraces its absurdity and runs with it. Enjoyed the comedy, the practical effects (to an extent) and the actors. Ultimately a little hollow and shallow in its messaging. Think of it more as a “The Menu” or “Blink Twice” rather than a “Triangle of Sadness” or “Killing of a Sacred Deer”. It works, but it’s nothing new.

  Still, the vibe at the screening was great. Lots of laughs. Loving the mystery movies, and the fact that a cheer rose when the A24 logo appeared.

  Somewhere in here there is a Five Star movie. We are given a glance at a young Edgar Allen Poe, played by Harry Melling, in his early years covering the events that lead him to who he would become. The atmosphere, setting, design and acting all work in its favor. The winter setting, chilliness of the location really set a bleak gothic tone.

  Unfortunately it’s bogged down by an inconsistent pace, a muddled final act, and twists which didn’t quite land for me. I wanted to love this, and almost did! Still a worthwhile watch and an intriguing story.
