A surprisingly thoughtful science-fiction film that cares more about characters than giant action set pieces and special effects. Wonderful performances by Saoirse Ronan and William Hurt anchor the ensemble and overcome some of the weaker parts of the script in this adaptation of Stephanie Meyer novel to which I am wholly unfamiliar with.

I really enjoyed the first film in this franchise and watched it many times in my teen years. The second film in the series fell so flat and left such a sour taste in my mouth that I had all but given up on even seeing this third installment, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it returned to the original's fast and fun approach.

Not many were expecting the American remake of a beloved (and rightfully so) Swedish horror film to be this good. I know I didn't think it would be, but this fantastic cast under the deft hand of director Matt Reeves make it their own; and it holds up to be as equally chilling and fascinating as "Let the Right One In".

For me this film (along with "Shaun of the Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead" from 2004) mark the high-point of Zombie movie-making. I can watch them over and over and over (and I usually do this time of the year) and never tire of their spirit, dark humor and suspense.
