Another addition to my “I understand why some people like this film but it is not ‘for me’” list. Basically I spent most of the runtime waiting for a Cocteau Twins acknowledgment that never came.

Emilia Pérez 2024
The best thing I can say about Emilia Perez is that it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be – which still isn’t to say that it was actually good.
Two stars for a strong performance by Zoe Saldaña, who in a more truly just world would have been nominated for Best Actress this year instead of her (apparently racist!) costar, plus none for whoever thought making this a lousy musical was a good idea to begin with and doing so via a tone-deaf (in every sense) and more than occasionally tasteless script that gallops to a rushed, unearned, and overwrought conclusion.

Saltburn 2023
After wasting more energy than I’d like to admit being annoyed her first movie, I should’ve known better than to inflict anything else directed by Emerald Fennell upon myself. Once again as in the even more insufferable "Promising Young Woman” her provocations are employed in the service of muddled and vapid "social commentary", and they're as equally empty here.
