The first half of "A Scanner Darkly" is really bad. So bad that I almost stopped watching. The animation feels gimmicky, the script is bad, the plot is boring. Then all of a sudden, about an hour in, there's a complete shift in tone, and the movie becomes profoundly affecting. I have no idea how this happens, but I'm glad it did.

High hopes but it didn't hit. The scifi stuff is fun and Pattinson is really great, but the religious cult dressing feels goofy, and the Ruffalo/Collette characters are written in such a heavy-handed way that by the end of the movie I was groaning every time they talked.
