Fantastically done! I didn't have a ton of interest in this, based on the subject matter. But it's a tautly rendered mystery thriller in a unique setting.

Hard Truths 2024
Every Mike Leigh film is a master class in character-driven storytelling. Hard Truths is one of his best. Pansy is one of the hardest-to-like characters you'll encounter. Brought to stunning life by Jean-Baptiste. But there are so many amazing performances here. Loved it.

Jungle Cruise 2021
Remember real animals? Remember those in movies? Maybe they were a pain to work with and their were limitations to what they could do, but I would take those any day over fake-looking CGI ones. Same goes for sets, trees, water, humans, flowers, enemies... but look, the CGI isn't the worst thing about this movie.

Alien: Romulus 2024
Well, this was frustrating. It looks gorgeous. It captures the look and feel of an ALIEN movie so well. It's a great set-up. There are some fun tie-ins to movies present and past. But some of the "homages" were a bit groan-worthy. I want to say this, sincerely, to every filmmaker. For ever person who claps at a regurgitated movie line, there's probably two who are groaning. Ultimately it collapses under the weight of trying to hit certain ALIEN movie beats when it was always more interesting when it was doing fresh stuff.
