The Last Voyage of the Demeter

    ★★★★½

For me, this movie was damn near perfect. We've had years of sexy Dracula. We have seen nearly every incarnation of the beast. But this is how you reinvent an old story. Take an oft overlooked aspect of the original take and dive deep. Also, a big fan of making ol' Drac scary again. He's supposed to be a disgusting grosso. We often forget that Bram Stoker absolutely did not include a romantic subplot for Dracula because he was a straight up villain. Loved seeing him as such.

    Talk to Me

    ★★★★½

"Talk to Me" was my movie of the summer long before I saw it. I am glad for the "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" fans, but I truly do not give a shit. "Talk to Me" on the other hand....has the weight of the It horror movie of 2023 on it. I always prepare to be let down; the hype is always a bit too big. The Apology

    ★★½

The Apology started out really strongly. The set-up is solid and there's nothing moodier or more atmospheric than a blizzard movie. The conditions are perfect; the snow isolates the characters, creates ideal bottle circumstances, and provides a beautful backdrop for chaos. And The Apology frequenly takes advantage of the blizzard. However. The whole thing feels a bit labored and overlong. And the final revelation isn't particularly shocking. It wouldn't need to be, except the movie seems to think it's a jarring conclusion that hasn't been loudly transmitted the whole time. Anna Gunn's performance is fantastic, and Janeane Garofalo is a compelling partner in crime.

I'm sure mileage will vary on this, and a lot of people will prefer Knives Out. But shit, I am the target audience for this movie. I love Agatha Christie novels. I love how they only work within mystery novel logic. And Glass Onion feels like a pleasantly self aware version of an Agatha Christie novel that still manages to make some trenchant commentary on dude-bros fumbling their way to idiot success. Perfect cast, stellar soundtrack, brisk run time....It is very much my jam.
