Craft elements undeniably impressive especially given the budget but on the whole felt a little less than the sum of its parts. Maybe the film’s length diluted rather than enriched the characters—particularly in the second half, when I think the characters’ motivations kinda got lost in the grandiosity of the film’s ambition. Thought the tunnel scene was particularly galling and lazy and not effectively built towards. There are definitely better movies that are like this movie but I guess I appreciate that someone is still at least trying to make those movies?

    Interesting Oscars season!

spatially unmoored, generally unpleasant to look at it, potentially offensive, first-draft script, musically inert, but the worst thing of all is that a trans Mexican cartel musical directed by a French guy starring Selena Gomez wasn’t even really camp

…but somehow still actually better than I thought it was gonna be so two stars I guess?

I am a baz luhrman apologist!! nobody else is doing this (getting 85 million dollars to film 159 minutes of movie like a total madman)!!

there’s so many underwhelming music biopics out there with no point of view—I think the form is just fundamentally flawed because you can’t really squeeze the whole life of anyone that famous into a movie with a discernible plot or resonant emotional beats so why not view Elvis through the eyes of his fucked up…
